From demo to live

Going live on the Dutch energy market

Energie Software ships ready to run. The platform connects to the real Dutch energy grid once your organisation holds the required regulatory registrations. This page explains what those are and how long they take.

The path to market entry

Two sequential steps, both handled by your organisation in parallel with platform onboarding.

Step 1 ~16–20 weeks

ACM market licence

The Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) grants the licences that allow a company to supply energy or operate as a metering party. This is the prerequisite for EDSN registration.

  • Submit written plan to ACM
  • Preliminary meeting in The Hague
  • Formal application via Cryptshare
  • Decision within 8 weeks
Step 2 ~4–6 months

EDSN network registration

EDSN (Energie Data Services Nederland) manages the central data exchange for the Dutch energy market. Registration requires connecting your systems, passing a formal qualification test, and receiving your market role.

  • Register via Partners in Energie
  • Technical connection established (3 weeks)
  • Qualification test in EDSN test environment
  • Market role activated (10 working days)

Total estimated timeline: 9–12 months from first ACM contact to live market entry

Energie Software's built-in simulation environment supports full customer demos, internal testing, and staff training during the entire registration period.

Step 1 in detail

ACM market licence

The ACM licence establishes your company as an authorised energy market participant. Without it, EDSN will not assign a market role. The process starts with a written plan and a preliminary meeting, there is no commitment required at that stage.

Most new suppliers apply for both electricity and gas licences simultaneously. The €1,705 fee applies per licence and per energy carrier.

As of 1 January 2026, every licence holder must offer the two ACM modelcontracten: fixed-term with fixed tariffs for at least twelve months, and indefinite with variable tariffs (Energiewet art. 2.23). A dynamic-price contract is required only of suppliers with more than 200,000 end customers (art. 2.9), so as a new entrant you offer one by choice, not by obligation. Energie Software supports all three out of the box - dynamic contracts are spot-indexed, billed on your actual quarter-hourly usage where P4 data is available, with a profile-weighted approximation otherwise.

Documents required for formal application
  • AO/IC framework
Administrative organisation & internal controls, completed by you, verified by an independent accountant
  • VOG + Bibob questionnaire
Certificate of Conduct for legal entities and integrity screening
  • Contract documents
The modelcontract with its confirmation letter, terms, quality criteria and withdrawal form, plus any free contract forms you actually offer. Energie Software generates these
  • KVK extract + financial position
Chamber of Commerce extract (max. 2 weeks old) and balance sheet / financing plan
  • Complaints board registration
Proof of registration with an independent complaints board (e.g. De Geschillencommissie)

Step 2 in detail

EDSN registration: 5 steps

1.

Register via Partners in Energie

Submit the registration form at partnersinenergie.nl. Requires eHerkenning level 3. A preliminary registration is possible before a market role is formally assigned.

2.

Technical connection established

EDSN connects your system to their central systems within three weeks. You receive login credentials for the test environment.

3.

Qualification in test environment

Formally demonstrate that your system correctly exchanges data with EDSN. Energie Software's simulation environment prepares you for this qualification.

4.

Complete registration with market role

Once your marktroltoekenning (market role assignment) is received from ACM, complete the EDSN registration. Requires eHerkenning level 3.

5.

Live on the market

After qualification and role assignment, EDSN registers you in the central systems and notifies grid operators. You can start operating after 10 working days.

Prerequisites to arrange first

  • eHerkenning level 3 (eH3)
  • PKIoverheid server certificate (via KPN)
  • Internal functioneel beheerder appointed
  • ACM market role assignment (marktroltoekenning)
  • Familiarity with MFFBAS market agreements

What Energie Software provides during registration

While you complete ACM and EDSN onboarding, the platform is fully operational.

Full simulation environment

EDSN messages are simulated out of the box. Staff can train, customer onboarding flows work end-to-end, and demos run without any live grid connection.

EDSN-ready message formats

All switch requests, meetcode notifications, and market messages are generated in the correct EDSN format. Passing the EDSN qualification test requires no custom integration work.

Live without a rebuild

Each market lane is switched from simulation to the live service by configuration, one at a time as its credentials arrive. No code changes, no migration, and the lanes still on a stand-in keep working meanwhile.

Data retention & GDPR

Data retention and GDPR erasure run against a documented retention policy, which you can read and adjust under Compliance › Data retention in the back office. Having that policy confirmed by your own legal counsel before production is your organisation's call; the platform checks that a policy is configured, not that anyone has approved it.

Ready to start the process?

We can walk you through the ACM application, help you prepare the technical prerequisites for EDSN, and keep the platform running for demos while you complete registration.
